Blog 8: Free will and determinism

The movie Minority Report and the play Oedipus the King deal with the issues of free will and determinism and how much control humans have over their lives. The article “Free Will and Determinism in the World of Minority Report” expands on this issue, offering some working definitions of determinism as well. Compare and contrast the perspectives of the two texts (the play and the movie) on the issue of how much control humans have over their lives or whether forces such as destiny natural and biological laws etc determine the outcome of our lives, making sure you include references to the article. While this is a philosophical topic, you will need to use textual evidence that make the topic’s development tangible and concrete for your readers. When using evidence from Minority Report, remember that you are not writing a movie review or mere plot summary.

Blog 7: The Allegory of The Cave through History

Plato uses the allegory of the cave to discuss the situations in life where people live in an illusion or refuse to accept the truth. Discuss such a situation from human history and explain what the illusion was; you can do some research on the internet to get an idea, but you cannot simply paste internet information to your post. If you use a small quote (no more than a couple of lines), put it in quotation marks. If you refer to information you found but put it in your own words (ie paraphrase it) again include full information about the source. Please avoid the obvious examples we used in class (slavery, the holocaust, Galileo and the shape of the earth).

Blog 6: Free will and destiny in Oedipus

Make a case either for Oedipus having free will or for destiny deciding his life in the play Oedipus the King. No matter the position you take, make sure you use textual evidence in your response. The response should be at least 350 words.
